Rotary Shares Stories updated
1/23/08Rotarians working together to provide a
role model and reading to local kids who might otherwise miss out on the joys of
reading. Dianne Fix, Joe Bono and all the other wheeler and dealers in the club
talking grown adults into putting on puppets, sitting on the floor and playing
story dealers.
Below are the general directions, the schedule, and list of substitutes.
General Directions:
The week prior to your scheduled reading date, you will be given a bag with 2-4 books in the bag and any applicable props (ie. puppets, hats, etc). You will need to coordinate the exchange of the book bag with Dianne Fix the week before your scheduled reading time – you can either get the book bag at our weekly rotary meeting OR you may pick up the books directly from Dianne. The books in the bag will correspond to the “theme” of the week (ie. back to school, thanksgiving, etc).
TIP1 : It is suggested that you read the books and practice your technique prior to arriving at the preschool.
TIP2: You should choose a week & theme that interests you. Its more fun that way!
Time/Place:
Each Thursday at 1:45pm, just after the rotary meeting. Expect to spend 15-20 minutes at the preschool. The preschool is located in the old middle school behind the fire station / wild cherries. There are is a grouping of buildings to the left of the main building, you can’t miss it!
When you arrive:
Introduce yourself to Bobbe the teacher, she will help you get the kids into a circle on the floor. Sit on a low chair/stool or floor in front of the children and make sure they can all see you. Hold the book in front of the group with the illustrations facing the children and reading from side to side.
Prior to starting the story, give the name of the author and illustrator. Do not be overly dramatic, but show good expression and have fun – the children will pick up on that! Use props when possible.
When you’re done:
You will leave one hard back book per week with the preschool. We will slowly build a library there week by week. The other books and props will be placed back into the bag, and returned to Dianne Fix at the next rotary meeting or can be left at the preschool where they will be stored.

A couple quick changes/reminders for the RSS
program:
1. If you CANNOT make your scheduled appointment, please be sure to find a replacement. We need to know about the substitutions so we can get you the book bags and make sure they are returned. (current schedule attached)
3. Minor Change: Please give the book bags back to Dianne after your scheduled reading. Please do Not leave them at the preschool (we don’t want them to get lost). Attached is a document with that change.
